And the key to choosing the ideal affiliate products to advertise on your precious website real estate involves the interlacing of marketplace demand with the level of market competition. Bottom line, picking the best products to advertise involves a bit of research. Follow the tips below and you'll have the right choices at your fingertips.

Customer Requirements

Your initial step in making the best promotional choice involves meeting the minimum requirements - the basic needs if your will - of your customer. And by customer, we mean YOUR target audience, the visitors who flock to your web business because of their interest in the content you offer them. Customer requirements satisfy the following;

  • Needs.  The logical reasons for wanting a product or service. For example, the need to do or have something better, faster, bigger, etc.
  • Desire. The emotional reasons for a product or service. For example, to look better, be smarter, be wealthier, etc.
  • Expectations. The value of the product or service for meeting their needs and desires.

Level of Competition

The level of competition, or market share, indicates the ratio of sales for the brand you wish to promote versus the total market sales for all related competitive products in the marketplace. Although companies typically define their target competitors, it is actually the consumer who ultimately decides the competitive frame, that is the list of related products or services that consumers consider when exercising their purchasing power.

You should therefore choose a market segment where you can carve out a leadership - or at least a strong challenger - role. Remember, while it's important to keep in mind the needs and desires of your customer when choosing your affiliate products, your overriding objective is profitability. If you can't challenge the competition in your chosen market segment, your efforts are wasted.


Demand

You've established your customers needs and desires and discovered a market segment which satisfies those needs, one in which you can challenge the competition. So what's next?
Assessing the demand, or general interest level, of the products in that market you wish to promote.

Some digging into the particular merchants you are considering promoting will reveal how 'hot' the product is in the marketplace. Pay attention to its popularity (checkout the affiliate sites, such as Clickbank and others) and how many other websites promote this product or service. If the product shows little promotional competition, then it may not be a good choice for consideration. However, if you see their advertising on a number of sites, you just may want to consider joining the competition.

Putting It All Together

You've collected all the data. Now it's time to evaluate the results. You've assessed the needs and desires of your target audience and found a high demand market that can satisfy those desires. You're measured the competition in the marketplace and established a plan for distinguishing yourself in that market. And you've found the best products within that market to promote. It's time to reap the benefits.
